Winedale

Our chapter is cooperating with the Winedale Historical Center for the mutual benefit of both organizations. The Winedale Historical Center is a division of the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History, an organized research unit of The University of Texas at Austin. The Center for American History (CAH) facilitates, sponsors, and supports teaching, research, and public education in U.S. history. In support of its mission, CAH acquires, preserves, and makes available for research archival, artifact, and rare book collections and sponsors exhibitions, conferences, video documentaries, oral history projects, grant-funded research, and publications.

Winedale is a complex of historical structures and modern facilities situated on 225 acres of land near Round Top, Texas, in northern Fayette County. Winedale offers outstanding examples of early Texas architecture and decorative arts, a rural setting, continuing education seminars, Shakespeare at Winedale, and other public programs throughout the year.

Written Directions

From Houston direction:

1. Take 290 West past Brenham to Burton.
2. From Burton (Spur TX 125) continue on US 290 for about 3.5 mi to TX-237.  Bear left onto 237 as if going to Round Top or La Grange.
3. Go about a 7.5 miles on 237 to Round Top.
4. Turn LEFT onto FM 1457 at the blinking light in Round Top.
5. After about 3 miles, turn LEFT onto FM 2714. (There’s both another green highway sign on the left side of the road with a left arrow and a big WINEDALE sign on the right of the road.)
6. Drive 1 mile down the road. When you get to Winedale, there will be a split rail fence on the right. The visitor’s center is on your left and the Meadows Conference Center is just past the visitor’s center.

From Austin direction:

1. Go east on US 290 East to Carmine.
2. At Carmine, turn RIGHT off 290 onto Spur 458. (There is a small green highway sign with Round Top and right arrows. There are also some greyish store fronts.)
3. Go about a mile down Spur 458 and take the fork to the RIGHT to Round Top.
4. After about 6 miles, turn LEFT onto FM 1457 at the blinking light in Round Top.
5. After about 3 miles, turn LEFT onto FM 2714. (There’s both another green highway sign on the left side of the road with a left arrow and a big WINEDALE sign on the right of the road.)

From La Grange:
1. Take 159 north until it becomes 237 and continue to Round Top.
2.  In Round Top at the blinking light, turn right onto FM 1457.
