When explorers first arrived in North America, the great American Bison herds numbered 60 to 70 million animals. They roamed wild on the plains and ranged from Mexico to Canada. Their presence nurtured and turned the soil, providing for a rich blanket of flora to carpet across the land. By early 1900, less than 1000 Bison remained! Both commercial and wild populations still exist today, but they represent only a small vestige of the once great herds.
The goal of our “Bring Back the Bison” project is to erect American Bison statuary on the restored Kachina Prairie in Ennis, Texas (see under Projects & Activities tab). This prairie stands as only a small part of the remaining 1/10 of 1% of the original 11 million acres of Blackland prairie. This endeavor will serve as a tribute to the Bison and help to educate visitors about an important ancestral species that once inhabited the vast native prairie.
