AT Online—Deep Dive: Snakes of North Texas – July 30

 Hello BPTMN Members –

Join us for our second July deep dive as we learn more about the snakes of North Texas in a presentation led by Praxy Burkett.

Program:  Snakes of North Texas

Presenter:  Praxy Burkett

Description:   This 30 minute lecture will examine the features and natural history of four native snake sub-families: Colubrinae (rat snakes and kin), natricinae (water and garter snakes), dipsadinae (mud snakes and hognose snakes), and crotalinae (pit-vipers). Species accounts to include: pantherophis obsoletus, lampropeltis holbrooki, lapropeltis triangulum gentilis, nerodia rhombifer, heterodon platirhinos, akistrodon contortrix, akistrodon piscivorous, and crotalus atrox.

Shannon “Praxy” Burkett is a former college professor (Collin College, 2009-2016) and volunteer geology curator/animal care volunteer (Heard Museum, 2009-2013). She has a master’s degree in volcanology from SUNY Buffalo and specialized in igneous petrography and volcano geomorphology. Presently, she is the co-owner of Blackland Geology & Reptiles, a small, education outreach business with a mission to showcase the natural bounty of North Texas (ecology, geology) through presentations, demonstrations with live snakes, webinars, and public lectures. On a more personal note, Praxy enjoys hiking, herpetology, and drawing and is known in online circles as the artist “praxcrown5.”
