AT In-Person Sneed Prairie Restoration Project Tour

October 1 @ 9:00 am - 11:30 am

Hello BPTMN Members:

You may remember this Tour was originally scheduled to take place on June 4.  Then it rained!  Fast forward several months, and the tour of Sneed and Garnett Prairies in Grayson County has been rescheduled for Saturday, October 1 beginning at 9:00 AM.  There is a Sign-Up Genius link below.

Program:  Sneed Prairie Restoration Project Tour

Tour Guide:  Dr. Peter Schulze, Professor of Biology and Environmental Science at Austin College

Date:  Saturday, October 1, 2022

Description:  Sneed Prairie is a 100-acre former farm that was donated to Austin College. The Sneed Prairie Restoration Project uses prescribed fire, grazing and mowing in a formal experimental design across nine fields of the former farm. When taking Conservation and Restoration Ecology at Austin College, students take part in restoring the prairie, monitoring the progress of the restoration and leading schoolchildren on field trips. To date, around 1,100 college students, faculty, and staff have contributed to the restoration effort. Our group will also visit Garnett Prairie, named after Dr. Hugh Garnett in honor of his passion for conservation and philanthropy. This seven-acre native tallgrass prairie, located south of Pottsboro, Texas, currently serves the Austin College Biology Department as an outdoor teaching and research laboratory. Come learn about the progress of the restoration as you walk through the prairies and identify native plants and grasses.

Time:  9:00-11:30 AM

Location:  1624 Keyes Rd – Sherman, TX 75092
