(AT) Medicinal Applications of Native Plants

August 13, 2020 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

AT ONLINE – Cross Timbers NPSOT Meeting – Medicinal Applications of Native Plants – August 13

Program:  Medicinal Applications of Native Plants

Speaker:  Dr. Ricky Linex

Description:  This free online presentation will begin at 6:30 PM with a short business meeting of the Native Plant Society of Texas (NPSOT) Cross Timbers Chapter by President Caroll Flournoy.  Ricky’s presentation will follow this meeting.

In the medicine cabinet of Native Americans were white prickly poppy, prairie coneflower and Mexican hat for headache; Indian plantain, dodder, Illinois bundleflower and purple coneflower for cuts and bruises; wild bergamot, golden crownbeard and Rocky Mountain bee plant for insect bites. Other plants helped to stanch wounds, ease childbirth and treat snakebite. Even if you are familiar with many of these plants in a garden setting, you might find that there is more to them than you knew.

For anyone who needs an introduction to Ricky, he is a wildlife biologist with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, based in Weatherford. He is a former state officer with the Native Plant Society of Texas, a longtime member of the Cross Timbers Chapter, and author of the authoritative Range Plants of North Central Texas. His talks are always engaging and informative in equal measure.  Ricky will answer questions following his presentation.
