AT Online – Special Edition Deep Dive – Introduction to Lichenology – November 19

Hello BPTMN Members –

It’s time for a special edition deep dive with a very special guest speaker, Manuela Dal Forno, who earned raves for her presentation at the recent Texas Master Naturalist Annual Meeting.

PLEASE NOTE: This special class will be presented one time only, at 6pm on November 19. We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity!

Program:  Introduction to Lichenology

Presenter:  Manuela Dal Forno

Description:   Lichens are symbiotic systems composed of a main fungus, unicellular green algae and/or cyanobacteria, and a complex microbiome, forming in nature what we see as the lichen thallus. Lichens are not a systematic group, but rather an artificial guild of organisms based on nutritional strategy. In this talk, we will get a chance to discuss the importance of lichens for humans and the ecosystem, as well as how to start on our own identifications. Join us in learning more about lichens!

Manuela Dal Forno is originally from Brazil, where she earned a B.S. in Biology and masters in Botany. She completed her PhD in Environmental Science and Policy in 2015 at George Mason University. In 2016 Manuela was awarded a National Science Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship in Biology and in 2018 a Peter Buck Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Botany Department at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. Manuela’s work has been focusing on multiple aspects of the evolution, diversity, genome and microbiome of lichens; and since 2019, when she joined the Botanical Research Institute of Texas (BRIT), she has also been studying the local Texas and the southern Philippines lichen “flora”.
