Frankford Prairie Maintenance. Come help us maintain this wonderful native prairie ‘in the city’ that was discovered a few years ago, which miraculously appeared after a century of annual mowing stopped. The prairie forms a third facet of this site with a historic cemetery and chapel that were part of the Frankford settlement in the mid-late 1800s. The prairie remnant has been carefully maintained since its discovery in 2011, and at least 200 species have been observed there, many of which are indicators of pristine Blackland Prairie. Since its discovery, the prairie has largely been left alone to allow surviving native plants to reestablish on their own, but we have been removing the most pernicious invasives that keep trying to move in, as well as unwelcome non-natives and woody plants. We will be adding to the plant species list each time we meet and may even engage in monitoring changes in vegetation over time. Bring work gloves, long pants, and sturdy boots/shoes as well will be working with digging tools and loppers. Don’t forget to bring your favorite protection against chiggers, as they can be a problem as we get into the summer.
