Spring is here and that means it’s time for the annual iNaturalist City Nature Challenge. Started in 2016 as a competition between San Francisco and Los Angeles, the City Nature Challenge (CNC) has grown into an international event, motivating people around the world to find and document wildlife in their cities using iNaturalist.
We will be participating in the 2022 Dallas/Fort Worth challenge.

Event: City Nature Challenge 2022: Dallas/Fort Worth
Project: Join Texas Parks and Wildlife, Texas Master Naturalists, the Nature Conservancy, the Audubon Society, and many others in a fun challenge to see which city can document the most species from April 29 – May 2, 2022.
It is easy to participate! Make observations using the iNaturalist app. You just take a picture of a plant or animal, and the community will help identify which species it is.
Any observation in the greater metropolitan area of Dallas/Fort Worth will count during the four-day challenge. You can participate by exploring the life in your backyard*, in your local park, or on a field trip with your local naturalist group (See the BPTMN outings listed below.) You can also help with IDs for other people’s observations to increase our species count.
*NOTE: While Texas Master Naturalist members are encouraged to make iNaturalist observations in public spaces, the 2022 CNC allows for observations on personal property. For those that are still not comfortable leaving home, this is a great opportunity to earn Volunteer Hours (VH) in your own backyard or front yard, or side yard!
Dates:
Observations: Friday, April 29 through Monday, May 2, 2022
Identification of Observations: Through Sunday, May 8.
Work Plan:
- Document plants and animals using the iNaturalist platform. (April 29-May 2) See information below to sign up for an iNaturalist account if you do not already have one.
- Make identifications of other’s observations of plants and animals in the iNaturalist platform (May-3-8)
Location: You can start in your yard, nearby public areas, or join a BPTMN Group Outing (See schedule below).
Logging VH:
- Time spent making observations and uploading photos should be logged under BPTMN: Blackland Prairie iNaturalist Project: TMN Field Research hours.
- Time spent curating and making ID’s should be logged as BPTMN: Blackland Prairie iNaturalist Project: Species ID and Curation (non-field work).
- VH must be entered daily, no weekly aggregate entries will be approved
- Reminder: No more than 12 hours may be logged in one or more VH/AT opportunities per day.

How to Create Your iNaturalist Account:
The City Nature Challenge uses the iNaturalist platform to collect participant observations. To participate, you will need to sign up for a free iNaturalist account; all you need is a valid e-mail address and a username you create. You can enter your observations via the iNaturalist website or via the free phone apps (available for both Apple and Android phones).
It’s easy to create your own iNaturalist account!
- Visit iNaturalist.org
- Download the app from the AppStore or Google Play
- Sign In
- Start sharing your observations.
- Get feedback from actual scientists, experts, and other naturalists.
