Hi there, BPTMN!

Have you ever maintained the grounds of a cemetery?  If you would like to add this to your resume, you must sign up to lend a hand and a shovel to care for the grounds of the historic Stiff Chapel Cemetery on Saturday, September 24, and on dates in October and November.

Event:  Stiff Chapel Cemetery Maintenance

Dates:  Saturdays – Sept 24, Oct 22, Nov 26

Time:  9:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Description:  Stiff Chapel Cemetery is a Texas Historic Cemetery and is open to the public. It does not belong to anyone.  The Cemetery dates from 1847 with the burial of 17-year-old James Stiff, who with his father, Jesse, fought in the Mexican American War. James returned home with his father but did not survive due to illness or trauma from the war. The Stiff family were in Texas at the time of the founding of the Republic of Texas and thus were granted 4,605 acres of land. James was buried not far from his family cabin on this land and this spot became the Stiff Chapel Cemetery. Because the cemetery has been fenced and protected from the plow and cow, it remains as a tiny 2-acre remnant of the Blackland Prairie and includes many native forbs and grasses.

Work Plan:  Work will include removing fallen limbs and branches, removing some dewberry that is invading grasses, clearing vegetation along fence line, and removing invading tree seedlings.

Location:  Stiff Chapel Cemetery
4696 County Road 412, McKinney TX 75071

Dress:  Routine dress code for activity in the field: Long-pants, boots/close-toed shoes; long-sleeved shirts are recommended.  Master Naturalists should wear their name badges.

Bring:  Drinking water, hat, gloves, sunscreen, insect repellant.  Tools to bring include loppers, clippers, sharpshooter shovels.

Contacts:
