VH – Native Garden Maintenance at the Heard Museum

Hey BPTMN Gardeners,

Are you looking for a regular schedule of volunteer hours—2 hours per week, doing something you enjoy with like-minded people—gardening with other gardeners?  Then you might want to sign up to assist with maintaining the Heard Museum native plant gardens.

Activity:  Native Garden Maintenance at the Heard Museum

Description:  Amy Monroy, horticulturist and Heard Gardens Manager, needs assistance with maintaining and improving the Heard Museum entrance garden and the Butterfly House gardens.  These two garden spaces use a variety of native plants.  The gardens help to educate the public about how native plants can be used to create wildlife-friendly landscapes in an urban setting.

Dates:  June 2022 and beyond!

Time:  See work plan below

Work Plan:  This volunteer activity includes typical gardening activities – maintaining beds, removal of invasive species, trimming, planting, and watering of the native garden at the entry to the Museum and the Butterfly House gardens.  Ideally, we would like to see members of the Native Plant Society of Texas (NPSOT) and Blackland Prairie Chapter of Texas Master Naturalist create ongoing volunteer groups to care for these garden areas.

There is some flexibility and anyone able to commit to a spot may register on the Heard Sign-Up Genius for June Gardening or contact Amy Monroy, Bill Woodfin or Tom Shackelford.

Please remember that anyone volunteering at the Heard must first complete a mandatory new volunteer orientation at the Heard (if you have not already).  Information and an online application are available HERE.  You may also contact Volunteer Coordinator Laura Ragan at volunteers@heardmuseum.org for additional information.

Location:  Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary, 1 Nature Place, McKinney, TX 75069

Dress:  Routine dress code for activity in the field: Long-pants, boots/close-toed shoes; long-sleeved shirts are recommended.  Master Naturalists should wear their name badges.

Bring:  Drinking water, gloves, hat, sunscreen, insect repellant
