Balcones Canyonlands Preserve<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe land use history of the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve has had a substantial impact on the health, viability, and diversity of our ecosystems. \u00a0Borrowing techniques and designs from permaculture, forest gardening, natural farming, as well as traditional land management methods, we are restoring and creating habitat for the endangered Black-capped Vireo, Golden-cheeked Warbler, and numerous rare and unusual plant species. \u00a0Creating and restoring endangered species habitat requires focusing on the whole supporting community. Starting from the ground up, we begin with rebuilding soils, seeding broad areas to increase biodiversity, and promoting the regeneration of woody plants. We then design plant guilds to create a sustainable framework with the goal of developing vibrant, abundant, and complex systems. \u00a0What\u2019s really exciting about this work is that we can apply what we learn at the Vireo Preserve to other areas within and beyond the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve.\u201d <\/span>

Cave without a Name<\/a>\u00a0is one of two caves near Boerne. It was designated a National Natural Landmark<\/a> in 2009. These are “natural areas that have been recognized as containing outstanding examples of the nations biological or geological features.” \u00a0“Cave without a Name Contains rare and nationally outstanding examples of speleothems (cave formations), important faunas that include a species of state-wide significance, and regionally important paleontological deposits of state or national importance.” National Natural Landmarks program is administered by the National Park Service, but the lands remain private. The program involves a voluntary commitment by the landowner “to retain the integrity of the property as it was when it was designated.”<\/p>\n

Unique are the concerts held in the Throne room throughout the year. The Throne Room has dynamic acoustics with a natural backdrop. They also have seasonal events. Check out their Event Calendar <\/a>\u00a0to check out their many events in the cave.<\/p>\n

There are RV facilities and primitive camping. \u00a0The grounds have hiking trails, bird watching and other wildlife viewing opportunities.<\/p>\n

Flashlight Tour\u00a0<\/strong>is a 1 1\/2 hour tour using only flashlights and candles at night. \u00a0Blind salamanders come out at night. \u00a0This is for group of 12 or more. \u00a0Cost is $24.95 for adults and $15.95 for kids.<\/p>\n
