AT: Cooling Our Planet By Restoring The Water Cycle
October 27, 2019 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pmFREE
When folks started climate modeling, to simplify, they ignored water vapor and focused on carbon dioxide. But the water cycle is 95% of planetary cooling while carbon dioxide is only 5%, according to Dr. Walter Jehne. We need to keep on reducing emissions, but it’s time to also work on restoring ecosystems and their soils. Besides this may be an easier and faster way to make a difference.
Soil that is rich in carbon compounds acts like a sponge to hold the rain until the trees can suck it up. The soil carbon sponge allows the rain to sink in instead of run off. It reduces flooding. Over the eons, trees have built soil and soil has nurtured trees and together they cool our planet.
Alas, people have, over the last 10,000 years, cut down forests and depleted soils. They say, “Forests precede civilizations and deserts follow them.” 50% to 70% of soil organic matter in farmland has been oxidized. Plowing, pesticides, chemical fertilizers, all have killed the life in soil.
We need your help to restore soils, forests and the cooling rain. It can be as simple as eating organic produce and less meat or composting yard waste and kitchen scraps.
On December 1, Dr. Bob Randall will explain this more to us.
Our talk was inspired by Www.GlobalCoolingEarth.org and Dr. Walter Jehne.
