VSP: Bird Sanctuary Construction at Weston Lakes – Keep America Beautiful – Green COVID Alert

October 11, 2022 @ 9:00 am - 3:00 pm

Free

City of Weston Lakes, Texas

The Texas Master Naturalist Coastal Prairie Chapter’s own Lucy Moyer is seeking volunteers to assist in the construction of a bird sanctuary at Weston Lakes a project of Keep Weston Lakes Beautiful in Fulshear TX (Fort Bend County).

On Tuesday, 10/11/2022, this project will begin. Volunteers for two shifts are requested: 9:00 – 11:00 AM; and 12:00 – 3:00 PM, Lunch (hot dogs, potato salad, chips, water, etc.) will be provided. The exact location of this opportunity follows: City of Weston Lakes – the corner of Wellspring Lake Drive and Winding Stream Drive. The park is on the left side of Wellspring Lake Drive.

Per Lucy, “The water feature is a pondless waterfall with a short stream. The volunteers will put the under liner and top liner over the waterfall and stream areas. The stream area is then covered with river rock. Larger stones and small boulders are then set on the waterfall and around the edges of the stream bed. Our contractor guides us and explains how each step in the build makes a low maintenance, clear running, beautiful water feature. The birds will love it.”

This is the first step of the project to bring shelter, water, and food sources to the sanctuary for the birds. This date is for the construction of the pond less waterfall feature that will provide water and bathing areas. Aqua-Springs Ponds and Fountains will supervise the construction project. All materials will be on site. Volunteers will need to bring gloves and close toe footwear. Additional dates will need to be scheduled for planting five 15 gal Yaupons, five 15 gallon Wax Myrtles, two Red Mulberries, 12 Beautyberries, and 30 other native bushes and plants. Bird feeders and bird houses will also be installed.
