One of the most iconic species that depends on milkweed is the monarch butterfly. Milkweed is the only host plant where monarchs lay their eggs, and its leaves provide the essential food for their caterpillars. The availability of milkweed is crucial to the survival of these beautiful butterflies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">There are over 100 species of milkweeds in the Americas and over 30 of them are native to Texas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">Two of the most important for monarch butterflies are Antelope Horns and Green Milkweed. These are common milkweeds that grow in pastures and along roadsides throughout the central flyway of Texas, the path that most Monarchs take on their migration through Texas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-black-color has-css-opacity has-black-background-color has-background is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Antelope Horns<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-3a1e9709 alignfull uagb-is-root-container\"><div class=\"uagb-container-inner-blocks-wrap\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-e52490b6\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wildflower.org\/plants\/result.php?id_plant=ASAS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Antelope Horns<\/a>, or&nbsp;<em>Asclepias asperula<\/em>, gets its name from the seed pods that look similar to the horns of an antelope. Its pale, greenish-yellow flowers, tinged maroon, are crowded in round, terminal clusters 3 to 4 inches across at the end of the flower stem. It spreads along the ground and attains 8 to 24 inches in height.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">This plant is attractive to bees, butterflies and\/or birds. This species of milkweed attracts huge bees as pollinators.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-515278fe\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/txmn.org\/coastal\/files\/2026\/07\/AntelopeHornMW.jpg?resize=225%2C300\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-122294\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Antelope Horn Milkweed<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-black-color has-css-opacity has-black-background-color has-background is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Green Milkweed<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-2efb64a2 alignfull uagb-is-root-container\"><div class=\"uagb-container-inner-blocks-wrap\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-10c876f9\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wildflower.org\/plants\/result.php?id_plant=ASVI2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Green Milkweed<\/a>, or&nbsp;<em>Asclepias viridis<\/em>, is the most common milkweed in Texas, ranging from deep East Texas to the Edwards Plateau. It typically has wider leaves than&nbsp;<em>Asclepias asperula<\/em>. The leaf margins are often wavy. Flowers are white and in an umbel, mostly one per plant. Close inspection shows that some rose or purple color is evident in the center of each individual flower. It is sometimes called Green Antelope Horns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is another member of the milkweed family that certain butterflies love. It can be found growing in rich or poor soils and blooms off and on over ther growing season through the end of summer. Has a spreading, open growth form. Requires little water and full sun.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-08fcce50\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/txmn.org\/coastal\/files\/2026\/07\/GreenMW.jpg?resize=225%2C300\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-122295\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Green Milkweed<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-black-color has-css-opacity has-black-background-color has-background is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Butterfly Weed<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-b466712c alignfull uagb-is-root-container\"><div class=\"uagb-container-inner-blocks-wrap\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-dd070274\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wildflower.org\/plants\/result.php?id_plant=ASTU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Butterfly Weed<\/a>, or&nbsp;<em>Asclepias tuberosa<\/em>, is probably the native milkweed that is most commonly grown by gardeners. It is prized for its large, flat-topped clusters of bright-orange flowers. The flower clusters, 2 to 5 inches across, are at the top of the flowering stem. The abundance of stiff, lance-shaped foliage provides a dark green backdrop for the showy flower heads.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-f85c6a38\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/txmn.org\/coastal\/files\/2026\/07\/ButterflyWeedMW-1.jpg?resize=300%2C225\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-122297\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Butterfly weed is available in nurseries and can be grown from seed. It actually has no milky sap, despite being considered a milkweed. Flowers do not usually appear until the plant is well-established.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another name for it is Pleurisy Root. It has been reported that this milkweed was boiled and eaten as greens and the roots used as a medicine by Indians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-black-color has-css-opacity has-black-background-color has-background is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Whorled Milkweed<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-808ba94f alignfull uagb-is-root-container\"><div class=\"uagb-container-inner-blocks-wrap\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-94160595\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wildflower.org\/plants\/result.php?id_plant=ASVE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Whorled Milkweed<\/a> (<em>Asclepias verticillata<\/em>) is one of the more toxic milkweeds. The leaves grow in a whorl around the stem, hence the common name. Another name is Horsetail Milkweed. Its narrow leaves and stems cause it to blend in with grasses when it is not in bloom.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-aca0e9f2\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/txmn.org\/coastal\/files\/2026\/07\/WhorledMW.jpg?resize=300%2C225\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-122298\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Whorled Milkweed<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-black-color has-css-opacity has-black-background-color has-background is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Texas Milkweed<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-91a5a156 alignfull uagb-is-root-container\"><div class=\"uagb-container-inner-blocks-wrap\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-0e42d75e\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wildflower.org\/plants\/result.php?id_plant=ASTE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Texas Milkweed<\/a> (<em>Asclepias texana<\/em>) is one of the more attractive native milkweeds, perhaps deserving of cultivation. It has slender stems up to 18 inches in height, with narrow elliptic leaves, becoming shrubby with age and found along the canyons of the Edwards Plateau. Carroll Abbott described it as \u201ccovered with tiny snowballs from May to August.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-52f55a11\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"263\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/txmn.org\/coastal\/files\/2026\/07\/TexasMW.jpg?resize=263%2C300\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-122299\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Texas Milkweed<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-black-color has-css-opacity has-black-background-color has-background is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Swamp Milkweed<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-fb97138c alignfull uagb-is-root-container\"><div class=\"uagb-container-inner-blocks-wrap\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-2ce5ecff\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wildflower.org\/plants\/result.php?id_plant=ASIN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Swamp Milkweed<\/a> or Pink Milkweed (<em>Asclepias incarnata<\/em>) grows in wet soils at the edge of streams and ponds. It is one of the largest milkweeds, sometimes as much as five feet tall, with shallow roots. Flowers are rose-colored to light purple.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-4d9cc7f1\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/txmn.org\/coastal\/files\/2026\/07\/SwampMW.jpg?resize=300%2C225\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-122300\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Swamp Milkweed<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With its showy flower clusters that attract butterflies and hummingbirds, swamp milkweed is underutilized in gardens. In moist soils or in a pond, it will thrive. They facilitate plant reproduction by transferring pollen between different plant individuals of the same species. They are often more efficient pollinators than honeybees because they have co-evolved with the native plants that provide their sources of food: nectar and pollen.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">Native bee populations are rapidly declining primarily due to loss of habitat. monarchs migrate to central Mexico and coastal California, where they cluster in trees and stay in a semi-dormant state until the spring.<br \/><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The year-round persistence of tropical milkweed in our area may interfere with monarch\u2019s natural migratory and overwintering behaviors.<br \/><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Winter-breeding monarchs suffer higher risks of mortality and a lower ability to reproduce successfully due to food shortage and the infectious disease OE.<br \/><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Data from Project Monarch Health showed that 49% of winter-breeding monarchs were infected with OE, compared to 9% of migratory monarchs sampled in Mexico and 15% of migratory monarchs sampled in the northern U.S. and Canada.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div One of the most iconic species that depends on milkweed is the monarch butterfly. Milkweed is the only host plant where monarchs lay their eggs, and its leaves provide the essential food for their caterpillars. The availability of milkweed is crucial to the survival of these beautiful butterflies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">There are over 100 species of milkweeds in the Americas and over 30 of them are native to Texas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">Two of the most important for monarch butterflies are Antelope Horns and Green Milkweed. These are common milkweeds that grow in pastures and along roadsides throughout the central flyway of Texas, the path that most Monarchs take on their migration through Texas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Antelope Horns<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-e11b02c5 alignfull uagb-is-root-container\"><div class=\"uagb-container-inner-blocks-wrap\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-645cf32f\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wildflower.org\/plants\/result.php?id_plant=ASAS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Antelope Horns<\/a>, or&nbsp;<em>Asclepias asperula<\/em>, gets its name from the seed pods that look similar to the horns of an antelope. Its pale, greenish-yellow flowers, tinged maroon, are crowded in round, terminal clusters 3 to 4 inches across at the end of the flower stem. It spreads along the ground and attains 8 to 24 inches in height.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This plant is attractive to bees, butterflies and\/or birds. This species of milkweed attracts huge bees as pollinators.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-795cc404\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/txmn.org\/coastal\/files\/2026\/07\/AntelopeHornMW.jpg?resize=225%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-122294\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Antelope Horn Milkweed<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Green Milkweed<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-2434192e alignfull uagb-is-root-container\"><div class=\"uagb-container-inner-blocks-wrap\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-0ae4c3f8\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wildflower.org\/plants\/result.php?id_plant=ASVI2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Green Milkweed<\/a>, or&nbsp;<em>Asclepias viridis<\/em>, is the most common milkweed in Texas, ranging from deep East Texas to the Edwards Plateau. It typically has wider leaves than&nbsp;<em>Asclepias asperula<\/em>. The leaf margins are often wavy. Flowers are white and in an umbel, mostly one per plant. Close inspection shows that some rose or purple color is evident in the center of each individual flower. It is sometimes called Green Antelope Horns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is another member of the milkweed family that certain butterflies love. It can be found growing in rich or poor soils and blooms off and on over ther growing season through the end of summer. Has a spreading, open growth form. Requires little water and full sun.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-5dce1583\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/txmn.org\/coastal\/files\/2026\/07\/GreenMW.jpg?resize=225%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-122295\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Green Milkweed<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Butterfly Weed<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-1e00fac8 alignfull uagb-is-root-container\"><div class=\"uagb-container-inner-blocks-wrap\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-850300c0\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wildflower.org\/plants\/result.php?id_plant=ASTU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Butterfly Weed<\/a>, or&nbsp;<em>Asclepias tuberosa<\/em>, is probably the native milkweed that is most commonly grown by gardeners. It is prized for its large, flat-topped clusters of bright-orange flowers. The flower clusters, 2 to 5 inches across, are at the top of the flowering stem. The abundance of stiff, lance-shaped foliage provides a dark green backdrop for the showy flower heads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Butterfly weed is available in nurseries and can be grown from seed. It actually has no milky sap, despite being considered a milkweed. Flowers do not usually appear until the plant is well-established.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another name for it is Pleurisy Root. It has been reported that this milkweed was boiled and eaten as greens and the roots used as a medicine by Indians.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-d5481377\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/txmn.org\/coastal\/files\/2026\/07\/ButterflyWeedMW.jpg?resize=300%2C225&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-122296\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Butterfly Weed<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Whorled Milkweed<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-402b1915 alignfull uagb-is-root-container\"><div class=\"uagb-container-inner-blocks-wrap\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-54c927dd\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wildflower.org\/plants\/result.php?id_plant=ASVE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Whorled Milkweed<\/a> (<em>Asclepias verticillata<\/em>) is one of the more toxic milkweeds. The leaves grow in a whorl around the stem, hence the common name. Another name is Horsetail Milkweed. Its narrow leaves and stems cause it to blend in with grasses when it is not in bloom.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-69325768\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/txmn.org\/coastal\/files\/2026\/07\/WhorledMW.jpg?resize=300%2C225&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-122298\" style=\"width:380px;height:auto\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Whorled Milkweed<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Texas Milkweed<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-6a4dff22 alignfull uagb-is-root-container\"><div class=\"uagb-container-inner-blocks-wrap\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-8866c762\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wildflower.org\/plants\/result.php?id_plant=ASTE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Texas Milkweed<\/a> (<em>Asclepias texana<\/em>) is one of the more attractive native milkweeds, perhaps deserving of cultivation. It has slender stems up to 18 inches in height, with narrow elliptic leaves, becoming shrubby with age and found along the canyons of the Edwards Plateau.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Carroll Abbott described it as \u201ccovered with tiny snowballs from May to August.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-681feede\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"263\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/txmn.org\/coastal\/files\/2026\/07\/TexasMW.jpg?resize=263%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-122299\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Texas Milkweed<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Swamp Milkweed<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-28a069e9 alignfull uagb-is-root-container\"><div class=\"uagb-container-inner-blocks-wrap\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-dff4f27b\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wildflower.org\/plants\/result.php?id_plant=ASIN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Swamp Milkweed<\/a> or Pink Milkweed (<em>Asclepias incarnata<\/em>) grows in wet soils at the edge of streams and ponds. It is one of the largest milkweeds, sometimes as much as five feet tall, with shallow roots. Flowers are rose-colored to light purple.<br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With its showy flower clusters that attract butterflies and hummingbirds, swamp milkweed is underutilized in gardens. In moist soils or in a pond, it will thrive. The inspiration for the sculpture is the park and all its native inhabitants of the different habitats. The park is a really special place to us. \u201cSeabourne in Ceramics\u201d is a sculpture made up of 17 individual pieces stacked on a vertical rod.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The base of the sculpture is a tree trunk symbolizing the sculpture being rooted in nature. Moving upwards through the sculpture is an array of realistic and abstract pieces with a dragonfly adorning the top. Almost all the pieces of this sculpture have been wheel thrown but a number of pieces have been altered or had hand sculpted additions, for example the green anole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The white &#8220;cake tiers&#8221; represent the different habitats of the park. These tiers act as a canvas for the detailed depictions of the birds, butterflies, leaves and seeds which were added as relief work. These details were hand sculpted, textured and painted with each tier taking around 8 hours of work over a month long period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is definitely some artistic licensing going on within the sculpture, partly based on my ability and also based on the limitations of the material itself, but I tried to be as true as possible to nature and to capture the details of the species which inspired me. For example, the intricate designs on a dragonfly\u2019s wings, the colorful patterns and wing shape of a butterfly and the beak shape and plumage of the birds.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The highlight tiers are based on 5 of the park\u2019s habitats with the following areas of the park represented: the wetlands, the woodlands, the prairie, the butterfly garden, and the arboretum. These pieces all focus on showcasing the native Texas species. The wetland piece includes a great blue heron, a roseate spoonbill and the gator! The prairie tier focuses on wildflowers and includes a few of my favorites including the Texas coneflower and rattlesnake master. The butterfly garden is represented in the next tier up and showcases a number of species including the Hackberry Emperor, Red Spotted Purple and of course a Monarch. The penultimate tier is the arboretum inspired piece which features the Texas Redbud, Mulberry and Pecan amongst others. The final tier is the woodland birds featuring a Tufted Titmouse, a Northern Cardinal and a Red-bellied Woodpecker. In addition to the tiers are pieces designed to add to the composition and whilst still inspired by nature, they are a little more abstract in style. These pieces focus on texture and form, for example the textured balls which remind me of the surface of the water or the seed pod style piece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most of the pieces are thrown on the pottery wheel with a few having been altered or sculpted, such as the green anole. The process starts with throwing the pieces and shaping the clay to the desired form. It is then left to dry to the leather hard stage, at which point pieces can be attached to one another (such as the birds to the cake tiers). At this stage details such as texture can also be added. Once bone dry the pieces go through their first firing (bisque) in a kiln. Once fired, the pieces have transitioned from clay to ceramic. It was at this stage that I painted the details of the birds, butterflies and snakes using underglaze. A final coat of clear glaze is added before the final firing to add the protective glass layer to the pieces. Each tiered piece was around 8 hours of work spread out over a 4-6 week period with the pieces being completed over about 9 months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We have always loved nature and spending time outdoors back home in Scotland, but it was only when we came to Texas that we started volunteering. The Texas Master Naturalist organization is incredible and the work this chapter does in the local area is phenomenal. We are excited to take back the skills we have learnt here and to find an organization near our new home in Scotland. We do have a few organizations working to re-wild areas of our Highlands, work on conservation of our ancient forests, protect our peatlands and ensure healthy marine habitats around our large coastline but we do not have one as far reaching and established as the TMN. So, while providing water may not be the first thing that comes to mind when creating a pollinator-friendly area, it\u2019s crucial. Relative to other animals, insects live very short lives. Please think about having water available in your yard, especially in times of drought or extreme heat, both of which seem to be more frequent lately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">The best choice for pollinators is a shallow dish with a sloped edge. Too much water in one place can be a risk for some insects. Most pollinators need very shallow water, or ways to enter and exit anything that might be deeper, or else they risk drowning. Shallow dishes with some rocks for landing are perfect. Bees love to drink out of bird baths, so if you have one, consider putting marbles or flat rocks in it to give bees a place to land and sip. Butterflies may also be drawn to mud puddles\u2014in addition to water, the mud likely includes vital salts and minerals that butterflies need. Lots of pollinators have a \u201cproboscis\u201d as part of their mouth. You can see the proboscis in many of the photos here; it is a small, straw-like tube that helps the insect consume nectar or water or any other liquid. The proboscis often looks different on different types of pollinators, but it enables them to reach liquid in different types of flowers. A long proboscis permits a pollinator to reach down into a tubular flower to find its nectar. A shorter proboscis means a pollinator must find flower nectar closer to the surface of the flower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">On most adult butterflies and skippers, and many adult moths, the proboscis is a long and thin tube that rolls up inside the mouth when it is not in use. Can you imagine rolling up a drinking straw to keep in your mouth to use whenever you become thirsty? When the proboscis needs to be used, the pollinator rolls it out like a long tongue! Bees and flies may also have a proboscis, although the tube (and the mouth around it) is often very different than that of the butterfly. Whatever the insect, the purpose of the proboscis remains the same\u2014it permits the insect to consume liquid by sucking and\/or sponging up the liquid. The good news is that it takes 4 to 7 days of stagnant water for mosquitos to develop and hatch, so plan on replacing the water every few days to guard against the mosquito life cycle.
