Denton City Nature Hikes/080313

Susan Pohlen:

This project is for master naturalists that enjoy sharing the outdoors with others.  Some hikes have a requested theme, such as wildflowers and grasses, trees, geology, birds, mammals, or the wetlands.  Most often the hikes are general exploration, giving participants an opportunity to view and learn about whatever catches their interest on that particular day, after all, nature is dynamic and one never really knows what they might encounter.

Most hikes take place at Clear Creek Natural Heritage Center, but on occasion the hikes take place at Cross Timbers Park.   Requests for hikes generally come through the Elm Fork Chapter email account and are forwarded to the project/opportunity manager.  The manager makes contact with the requester to get more information such as number and age of participants and general area of interest in an effort to best match hike expectations and expertise.

Hike requests most often occur at the beginning of the school year when parents once again become active with scout groups, and in the spring and fall.  Because naturalists are busiest during spring and fall, and because many requests are for Saturday hikes, it is sometimes difficult finding naturalist volunteers for hikes.  We would love to add more names of potential volunteers to our list.  If you would enjoy the opportunity to lead or assist with hikes in Denton, please contact the current manager and have your name added to the email distribution list.
