Ash tree assessment – AT
January 24 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
One event on January 24, 2019 at 1:00 pm
The City of Fort Worth needs your help. With the new knowledge that the emerald ash borer has been confirmed in Tarrant County, we need to prioritize and plan our response for the best stewardship of our resources. One big step in this process is surveying our existing ash trees. We estimate our ash population is just over 4%, and we know the locations of a majority of them. Where we need your help is inventorying these trees to gather specific information.
By surveying these trees, we hope to gather information to help the City decide on treatment options by discerning the trees’ vigor, proximity to targets and other elements that will lead to the cost of the treatments. This information will prioritize money to spend, but could also justify requests for additional funds when the timing is necessary.
For the committed volunteers, we would start with training that delves into the kind of information we’re hoping to receive. While it is specific to our ash trees, it is similar to subjects covered in previous street tree assessments. The one new aspect for this project is the use of a GPS app to mark the location of trees inspected. GPS Essentials will be downloaded on your phone ahead of time, and we will train you on the use of it, as well as using the electronic form for submitting the trees’ information. We will also have the opportunity to go out and survey a few trees with staff available to assist.
The hope is after a few assisted surveys, volunteers can go out on their own and inventory City trees on their own time. This is an incredible opportunity to provide a very intentional impact in the battle with emerald ash borer.
For those interested, we will provide two opportunities to go through the training course. Wednesday, January 16th from 10 AM – 12 PM or Thursday January 24th from 1 PM – 3 PM. We will meet at the Rolling Hills Tree Farm and stay close by. Other survey dates will be scheduled and planned to make the best use of our resources.
