VOL – Houston Christmas Bird Count

December 14, 2014 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

Volunteer Opportunity!

Opportunity to volunteer, have fun, learn local birds, and area bird survey protocols!

The Houston CBC is the oldest CBC in Texas. The count usually find over 150 species. The count area is a circle with a 15 mile radius from a lat., long point, that once established remains the same thru time. The CBC is the oldest citizen science project and was started by Audubon in 1899.  Ivory-billed Woodpeckers were once recorded on the Houston CBC.

For this survey, less experienced birders are paired with an area leader who is familiar with which birds are normally found in their area. Spotters, counters and all levels of birders are needed and welcomed!

Houston CBC Sunday, 12-14-14 Compilers: Stennie Meadours/David Sarkozi

This count began in the early 1900s, approximately 1913, and is sponsored by the Houston Nature Club, Ornithology Group. The area includes, San Jacinto Battleground State Park, parts of Galveston Bay, Houston Ship Channel, Baytown Nature Center, the Highlands and a small part of LaPorte where 90 species were seen last year!  All of the common birds are found including Peregrine Falcon and Bald Eagle. Then there are surprises like the Long-tailed Duck, and  Scooters! This year we are hoping the unprecedented Brown Boobies will remain at the Baytown Nature Center.  Please contact Stennie Meadours stenmead@aol.com,  hm 281-339-1526 to with questions or to participate.  I will post a map next week and more info Thank you!
