Ground Truthing the Species Distribution Model of Bachman’s Sparrow (Peucaea aestivalis)

March 15, 2023 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Presenter:  Liam G. Wolff, Former Graduate Research Assistant, Stephen F. Austin University

Bachman's Sparrow and habitat

Webinar Description:

In 2013, a species distribution model was developed by Mark Anderson and Gary Beauvais for each Species of Greatest Conservation Need in Texas for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. This spatial model mapped the probability of occurrence for each species in low, medium, and high probability categories to elucidate crucial regions for management. Among these species is the Bachman’s Sparrow (Peucaea aestivalis), which in Texas historically occurred east of the Brazos River in pine and oak savannah habitats.

This study investigated the efficacy of the Andersen and Beauvais (2013) species distribution model for Bachman’s Sparrow by ground-truthing the model using automated recording devices to gather detection data at 80 survey sites in each probability category (n = 240 survey sites total). An occupancy modeling approach was then used to determine the most crucial habitat covariates for management in Texas.

Biography:

Liam Wolff is a conservation ecologist with a deeply-rooted passion for avian conservation stemming from his childhood interest in birds. He graduated from Augusta University in 2018 with a bachelor’s degree in Ecology and became involved in research monitoring endangered birds in Texas and investigating stopover habitat for migratory songbirds on the Gulf Coast. He studied Bachman’s Sparrow occupancy and vocalizations in Texas for his masters degree at Stephen F. Austin State University, graduating in 2022. He is now a research specialist at Texas A&M Corpus Christi investigating colonial bird nesting habitat availability and productivity in the Laguna Madre.
