Volunteer Opportunities \u2013 September 15th<\/sup>\u00a0to 17th<\/sup><\/u><\/strong><\/div>\n<\/header>\n<\/div>\n

The 5th<\/sup>\u00a0grade students from Heritage Elementary in the Southside Independent School District in southern Bexar County are preparing for a 3-day\/2-night field trip to the Bamberger Ranch Preserve.\u00a0\u00a0Five volunteers will be needed on Day One (September 15th<\/sup>) to lead nature hikes and to assist with sweep netting & pinning insects.<\/p>\n

On Day One, the students arrive around 10:30 am, unpack, and eat their sack lunches.\u00a0\u00a0At 12:45 pm, students receive a quick lesson on watersheds and then volunteers help guide them from the Center to the patio of Madrone Lake where they see the rain machine demonstration.\u00a0\u00a0Then the students are divided into groups and volunteers lead them on a nature hike followed by insect collection and pinning. These environmental education activities are scheduled to end by 4 pm.<\/p>\n

The summary of Day One volunteer opportunities is as follows.<\/p>\n

September 15th<\/sup><\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Arrive by 12:30 pm at the Margaret Bamberger Research & Education Center (MBREC) parking lot and end by 4 pm \u2013 Need 5 volunteers.<\/p>\n

In addition, volunteers are needed each day to help with meals and provide hands-on lessons in water conservation.\u00a0\u00a0Lunches consist of build-your-own sandwiches\/hot dogs and dinners include helping ranch staff prepare a simple entr\u00e9e, salad, and bread.\u00a0\u00a0After each meal, a subset of students helps with loading the dishwasher and there is a water conservation discussion.\u00a0\u00a0If time permits, you may include a generic discussion on composting.\u00a0\u00a0Asking the students about their activities on the ranch is encouraged as a means of reinforcing the day\u2019s lessons.\u00a0\u00a0Volunteers are welcome to stay after dinner for the raptor demonstration\/discussion should there be one.<\/p>\n

The summary of meal preparation volunteer opportunities is as follows.<\/p>\n

September 15th<\/sup><\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Dinner \u2013 Arrive by 4:30 pm – Meal served by 5:30 pm \u2013 Need 1 to 2 volunteers.<\/p>\n

Highland Lakes Birding and Wildflower Society welcomes our very own members for an in-depth talk on how to become an avid bird watcher, nature preserver, and conscientious citizen of your own backyard. Robyn Richter will report on rainfall collection with CoCoRaHS (Community Collaborative Rainfall, Snow, and Hail Network) and fill us in on Project Feederwatch. Greg White will cover the Audubon\u2019s \u201cChristmas Bird Count\u201d and the Texas Parks and Wildlife\u2019s \u201cGreat Texas Bird Classic\u201d; what they do and how to get involved. Karen Stewart will feature a talk on iNaturalist and the Phenology Project at Inks Lake State Park. Kathy McFarlen will inspire with her talk on birding goals and how she found success as an avid steward of Citizen Science.<\/p>\n

\nWe will meet Thursday, September 3, 2026<\/span> in the Parish Hall at Trinity Episcopal Church, 909 Avenue D, Marble Falls, TX 78654<\/span>. Doors will open at 9:30<\/span> for social time and light refreshments (Hospitality will welcome refreshment donations), the business meeting starts at 10:00<\/span> with presentations to follow at 10:30<\/span>. Visitors are always welcome!<\/p>\n

Volunteers should arrive by 12:30 p.m. Sept. 1 at the Margaret Bamberger Research & Education Center parking lot. Students will receive a lesson on watersheds before volunteers guide them from the Center to the Madrone Lake patio, where they will see the rain machine demonstration. The students will be divided into groups for a volunteers-led nature hike followed by insect collection and pinning. The environmental education activities are scheduled to end by 4 p.m. Need five volunteers. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Meals and water conservation\/composting lessons:<\/p>\n

— Sept. 1 Dinner: Arrive by 4:30 p.m. Meal served by 5:30. Need 1 to 2 volunteers.<\/p>\n

— Sept. 2 Lunch: Arrive by 11 a.m. Meal served by 11:30. Need at least 1 volunteer.<\/p>\n
