Bird abundance is an important indicator of the health of ecosystems. Sensitive to toxins and pollutants, problems detected in wild birds can serve as an early warning system that something is wrong in the environment.
What then can birds tell us about the quality of our air?
Recent studies have confirmed that birds are afflicted by the same respiratory problems as humans when exposed to air pollution. In addition, field studies have shown that the effects of air pollution can extend to bird habitats as well, changing the landscape in subtle but important ways.
