Event Summary:
Understanding the past changes in the status of the California Condor and it’s relevance to recovery programs of the present endangered population of these birds.
Event Description:
Join Bexar Audubon Society to discover the work of an avian paleontologist, Dr. Steven E. Emslie, a scientist who digs in caves, unearthing bones that help explain the change in distribution of birds over time. Dr. Emslie will present his program via Zoom, but we will also gather in person at Alamo Colleges District to view his presentation.
The California Condor was once found all across North America during the last Ice Age. Today, the California Condor is critically endangered. It became extinct in the wild in 1987, but captive breeding efforts boosted their numbers. It has been successfully reintroduced to the wild, and a population of condors now live in Grand Canyon National Park once again. The fossil data have relevance to recovery programs of the present endangered population of California Condors.
For more information on California Condors and the recovery efforts to sustain them, watch the videos and read the information on the California Condor Stories website.
Dr. Emslie is a marine ornithologist and avian paleontologist who has been a Professor in the Department of Biology and Marine Biology at University of North Carolina Wilmington
since 1998. He studies not only living seabirds but also the fossil record of birds and their paleoecology. His dissertation research for his PhD at the University of Florida was on the origin and evolution of condors in North America.
