Event Summary: Texas Nature Trackers with Texas Parks and Wildlife Department are launching a new citizen science project December 2024 for bat monitoring. There was a virtual training held on 12/8/2025 (AT24-430) and field training in San Marcos on 12/15. Interest in the Hill Country was great, and so a new field training day has been created for Fredericksburg on 1/19/2025.

Event Description: Is the lack of data on Texas Bats driving you batty? Texas Nature Trackers is debuting a new citizen science project and wants you to be involved! Texas Nature Trackers is recruiting Texas Master Naturalists from central Texas to survey for bats in bridges. During this training we will go over the importance of the project, the goals, and how to conduct bat bridge surveys. Volunteers will be trained on how to use the Survey123 app, learn the protocol, and learn how their work will improve conservation of our state’s bats. This is a volunteer project for Texas Master Naturalists, coordinated by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department – Texas Nature Trackers and the Texas Department of Transportation to survey for inspecting transportation structures for bats and signs of bat use. Texas Nature Trackers can lend out high powered flashlights for surveying, as well as safety vests and some hardhats if requested.

Prerequisite: Prior to the field training, the initial training is required, and here is the link. Link to the virtual training on Sunday December 8: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1cG7RpotO_xrCdTFF7lbaYpHoVGWM4mvi/view?usp=sharing As this training is not live with the ability to answer questions,  it will not count for AT credit per Wendy Anderson and state TMN rules.
