Plant Family Study Group

November 18, 2021 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Charlie was good enough to let me depart a bit from plant families and do a session on collecting plants for BRIT.

We will go over what to take to the field, how to collect, how to press and dry plants, and what data to record for the herbarium label.

As nothing much is blooming in the wild these days, I will ask those of you who are coming to go get a “real” plant at Home Depot or a garden center.
Something living in a pot which will have flowers and roots.  Nothing huge.  Any old flower will be fine.  We can pretend to “dig it up” out of the pot, and prepare it for drying.  Save the plant label – it’s always nice to know what you are “digging up”.

Don’t buy a plant press unless you want to.  We can put everything in my press to dry – then we will mount the “vouchers” in the December PFSG or whenever is convenient for Charlie.  The nice thing about botany is that it is very laid back.  No rush, no hurry.  Stuff can sit in a press for a looooong time.

We will collect in the wild for real and for BRIT in the spring when the good stuff blooms… :-).
