Texas Prescribed Fire Field Day

September 16 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

Free. In person

Details: The field-based program is designed for landowners, fire practitioners and local officials interested in planning and carrying out prescribed fires in Central Texas. The event is free. Attendees will take part in an active prescribed burn, weather permitting, and gain insight into real-time decision-making, fire behavior, and crew coordination.

During the field day, participants will learn:

  • Fire ecology principles relevant to Texas landscapes
  • Texas prescribed burn laws and liability considerations
  • Key components of an effective burn plan
  • How to assess weather conditions, fuel characteristics, and fire behavior in the field
  • Proper equipment use and crew organization during a burn
  • Ignition techniques and holding strategies
  • Safety protocols and risk management on prescribed fires
  • Post-burn evaluation and next steps for land management

This field-focused event emphasizes applied learning and gives participants the opportunity to engage directly with experienced fire practitioners in an operational setting.

Join us at Kerr Wildlife Management Area in Kerr County on September 25 for a hands-on Prescribed Fire Workshop designed for landowners, managers, and PBA members.

This one-day event will cover fire ecology in the Edwards Plateau, Texas burn laws and liability, burn plan fundamentals, and how to read weather, fuels, and fire behavior in the field.

Participants will also learn about equipment and crew organization, enjoy an informal lunch Q&A, and take part in a field tour and, weather permitting, a short live-fire demonstration.
