The USGS has been monitoring groundwater table levels in hundreds of water wells in our region for more than 40 years; wells that are pumping water from the Chicot, Evangeline, and Jasper aquifers\u2013sources of drinking water for much of Montgomery County.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At September\u2019s Woodlands G.R.E.E.N. talk, the presentation will cover current year (2026) regional water-level altitudes in the Gulf Coast Aquifer system for the Houston-Galveston region, including Montgomery County. This presentation discusses the ecological function of fallen leaves for native butterflies, moths, and other beneficial insects. Attendees will learn evidence-based yard management strategies to protect and increase the biodiversity of their yards.<br \/>About the Speaker: Max Ferlauto, PhD; State Entomologist at Maryland Department of Natural Resources<br \/>Max was raised in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia metropolitan area (DMV) where he developed a fascination with urban ecology. Then he went to Juniata College and majored in Plant Ecology. He then received a PhD in Entomology from the University of Maryland studying the effects of leaf raking on overwintering insects. But it also has one of the highest rates of rare, threatened, or endangered plant species. Mercer Arboretum and Botanic Gardens is working closely with these species to learn more about them and conserve their populations in the wild.<\/p>\n<h2><b>About the Speaker<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Kari\u00a0Hernandez is the Plant Collections Curator at Mercer Arboretum and Botanic Gardens in Harris County, Texas. As curator,\u00a0Kari\u00a0oversees the Garden\u2019s living plant collections, as well as the preserved plants of the Dr. Larry E. Brown Herbarium at the Mercer Botanical Center. Attendees will take part in an active prescribed burn, weather permitting, and gain insight into real-time decision-making, fire behavior, and crew coordination.<\/p>\n<p>During the field day, participants will learn:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fire ecology principles relevant to Texas landscapes<\/li>\n<li>Texas prescribed burn laws and liability considerations<\/li>\n<li>Key components of an effective burn plan<\/li>\n<li>How to assess weather conditions, fuel characteristics, and fire behavior in the field<\/li>\n<li>Proper equipment use and crew organization during a burn<\/li>\n<li>Ignition techniques and holding strategies<\/li>\n<li>Safety protocols and risk management on prescribed fires<\/li>\n<li>Post-burn evaluation and next steps for land management<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>This field-focused event emphasizes applied learning and gives participants the opportunity to engage directly with experienced fire practitioners in an operational setting.<\/p>\n<p>Join us at Kerr Wildlife Management Area in Kerr County on September 25 for a hands-on Prescribed Fire Workshop designed for landowners, managers, and PBA members.<\/p>\n<p>This one-day event will cover fire ecology in the Edwards Plateau, Texas burn laws and liability, burn plan fundamentals, and how to read weather, fuels, and fire behavior in the field.<\/p>\n<p>Participants will also learn about equipment and crew organization, enjoy an informal lunch Q&amp;A, and take part in a field tour and, weather permitting, a short live-fire demonstration.<\/p>\n<h4>Available Continuing Fire Training (CFT) Credits<\/h4>\n<p>Participants will earn 6 Continuing Fire Training (CFT) credits.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Registration and more info:<\/strong>\u00a0For questions, contact David Brooke, AgriLife at\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:david.brooke@ag.tamu.edu\" target=\"_blank\">david.brooke@ag.tamu.edu<\/a>.
