Tune in with MJV staff to learn about the ins and outs of migration across the speciescape. In this course, you will learn about what defines a migration and why different animals migrate from season to season. We will also dive deeper into a variety of species and the treks they make as they fly, swim, gallop, and slither across landscapes to find the resources they need for survival. This course will cover the migrations of bats, bugs, birds, and more, before focusing in on the monarch migration in closer detail. Then, we will examine their migratory pathways, overwintering habitat and behavior, and biological processes that make their migration possible.
Instructors: Alexa Koch and Alyssa Taylor

Register here: On the Move: Monarchs and Other Animal Migrations

Please use the following AT Code: AT: Online Training: TMN AT Report hours

Live and Interactive on Zoom. Yet despite its fame, we know surprisingly little about where it grows, how common it really is, or what it needs to survive. Chorioactis geaster has an unusual history. It is known from only two regions of the world: Japan and the south-central United States. These populations have been separated for more than 19 million years, making the Texas lineage an important piece of fungal evolutionary history. In Texas, the mushroom has traditionally been associated with decaying cedar elm stumps, but it is not yet clear whether cedar elm is truly required or whether this pattern reflects where people have traditionally looked for it.

In this talk, I’ll discuss what we know—and what we still don’t know—about the Texas Star, and how we can use both scientific surveys and citizen science to learn more. Reports and observations from mushroom hunters, naturalists, landowners, and other community scientists can help us build a much broader picture of where this unusual fungus occurs across Texas. By combining these observations with targeted field surveys, we can begin to determine whether the Texas Star is truly rare or simply under-documented, and what that might mean for conserving this remarkable Texas fungus.

Register and join live stream for a chance to win a mushroom prizes.

Register here: Join from Zoom Workplace app – Zoom

Please use the following AT Code: AT: Online Training; TMN AT Report hours

Free. As an ecologist and educator, Nick studies the science of pollinators and native plants, and helps people find wonder in the world wherever they live. Nick’s work has been featured in leading academic journals, and in venues like USA Today, CBS News, The Boston Globe, and on the TEDx stage. He coauthored and photographed the first field guide to wild bees (watchingbees.com) and teaches an annual course at Eagle Hill Institute on the topic. He received his PhD in Biology from Tufts University, worked as research fellow at Chicago Botanic Garden, and is currently an Assistant Professor at City College of New York and member of Pollinator Pathways Advisory Board. Despite the popularity of pollinator gardens, best-practice advice can be confusing, overwhelming, and contradictory. In this talk, we’ll demystify the science behind pollinator gardening. We’ll cover the foundational tenets, then dive into areas of recent research on hot topics such as cultivars (and nativars), nesting habitat, and leaving leaves—and what it all means for you and your garden. Now, sweeping changes under the Trump Administration are reshaping how the law works.

Join Hardy Kern, Director of Government Relations at American Bird Conservancy, and Dr. Andy Caven, Director of Central Flyway Programs at the International Crane Foundation, for a look at where the ESA stands today and what’s at stake.

Hardy will cover the policy landscape, including the administration’s regulatory changes and the legal challenges now underway. Andy will then focus on a tangible consequence: the rescission of the ESA’s regulatory definition of “harm,” which removed habitat destruction as a form of prohibited take. That change undermines the foundation of Habitat Conservation Plans and much of Section 10 of the Act, which have long brought private landowners and industry to the table to protect habitat. Andy will explain why this matters for the cranes that depend on wetlands and river habitat along the Central Flyway, and what conservationists can do next.

This webinar is brought to you by the International Crane Foundation and the American Bird Conservancy.

Please register here: Losing Ground: What the Endangered Species Act Rollbacks Mean for Whooping Cranes

Please use the following AT Code: AT: Online Training; TMN AT Report hours

Free.
