Longleaf Chapter – October BioBlitz

October 26 @ 9:00 am 5:00 pm

From Laura Clark, Longleaf Chapter: “We will be visiting the Canyonlands unit of the Big Thicket This area is a mature forest and one of the quietest places I’ve ever been. It has a long boundary on the Neches River, and beavers are active in some of the lowlands. The unit was acquired in 1993. It has no signs or marked trails, but we will be able to follow an old logging road and firebreaks. We will travel in about a mile to “the Sanctuary” which overlooks one the canyons that gave the unit its name. From there, we can return or travel another mile on to the river, depending on how everyone feels. We will meet at 9 am at the entrance to the unit, which is between Dam-B and Spurger on County Road 4415 off of FM 92. If you’re coming from Hwy 190 just north of Martin Dies/Dam-B, head south on FM 92 for 10 miles. From Spurger, it’s 1.7 miles. Turn east on County Road 4415 (the only way you can turn), and go 1.7 miles. I will be parked on the side of the road there. If you want to use GPS coordinates to get there, it’s 30.723140, -94.147586.”
