The Little Sit, Hagerman NWR, December 6, 2021
It was pretty darn cold outside when Bluestem Master Naturalists went out to Hagerman to count birds. We gathered at predawn–that means 6:45 am–for our “Little Sit.” It was so windy that we had to pull our cars up to form a windbreak. BUT it was so much fun. We tallied 41 different kinds of birds, including thousands of snow geese, Lucy, our bald eagle and a merlin. Thanks to Laurie Sheppard and Jack Chiles who are teaching us how to identify the birds.
Initial Training Field Trip: The Sand Pit, November 9th, 2021
New trainees journeyed to Bonham last weekend to learn about a Sand Pit Reclamation Project and Forest Ecology. Thanks to Judge Randy Moore, they learned how to cut down trees in a forest to maximize the use of the area by wildlife. They also learned how to measure the height of a tree and how to tell its age. The most fun, however, was digging in the huge sand pile, looking for beads!!!
