Cross Timbers Park

7680 Douglas Ln.

North Richland Hills

First, a little history about Cross Timbers Park. In the mid 1990s before the City of North Richland Hills developed what is now known as Cross Timbers Park, the area was known as Calloway Branch, after the creek that runs through the property. At that time, the city wanted to develop the 100 acre Eastern Cross Timbers site into typical ball fields, soccer fields and playgrounds. But then local resident, Glenn Nerwin, who was also the president of NPSOT, North Central chapter, fought the city and was able to persuade them to set an area aside and named the area Cross Timbers Park. Sadly, Glenn Nerwin passed away 4 years ago after a battle with cancer. There is a plaque on a bench honoring his hard work there. Approximately 60 – 70% of the park is set aside as a natural area.

Some species to expect are Big Bluestem (Andropogon gerardii), Little Bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium), Indiangrass (Sorghastrum nutans), Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum), Chapman’s Purpletop (Tridens chapmanii), Purpletop (Tridens flavus), Purple Threeawn (Aristida purpurea), Inland Seaoats (Chasmanthium latifolium), Silver Bluestem (Bothriochloa laguroides), Sideoats Grama (Bouteloua curtipendula), Woolly Rosette Grass (Dichanthelium acuminatum), Scribner’s Rosette Grass (Dichanthelium scribnerianum), Canada Wildrye (Elymus canadensis), Southeastern Wildrye (Elymus glabriflorus), Big Top Lovegrass (Eragrostis hirsuta), Plains Lovegrass (Eragrostis intermedia), Red Lovegrass (Eragrostis secundiflora), Gayfeather (Liatris mucronata), Maximilian Sunflower (Helianthus maximiliani) and Flat Flower Gerardia (Agalinis homalantha).
