Mockingbird Nature Park
The 3rd Saturday of the month mean Wildflower Walks at Mockingbird Nature Park!
From May to October, Indian Trail members lead free walks for the public and members who want to learn more. Guests learn names and fun facts about what’s blooming in their neighborhood.
This year’s first walk kicked off on a chilly March morning. It was still a little early in the season for big blooms, so 11 guests and leaders Charlie Grindstaff, Erwin Ramos, and Linda Sanford only spotted small flowers blooming at this time.
April was a beautiful month for walking as Bluebonnets put on their show. Charlie led a crowd with Maegan Bacon and Denise King as shepherds. We even had a rat snake make a (very quick) appearance.
May flowers make for a great time to walk Mockingbird. Maureen Nitkowski was this month’s wildflower leader.
June’s walk was led by Laura Beattie with assistance from Tannis Lambert and Sherry Mossbarger. Guests are now seeing how the park changes from spring to summer as temperatures rise.
September’s walk was led by Charlie Grindstaff with help from Denise King and Muffy Ruby. 11 guests and 14 members. It went a little long but huge rainfalls had 40 different plants in bloom. The most fun plant- Sensitive Briar, most surprising were all the milkweeds in bloom, most plentiful was Pasture Heliotrope, most fragrant was False Pennyroyal, and never seen before- Scarlet Spiderling.
In October, Lori Crider led our last walk of 2022 along with shepherds Charlie and Jerry McClung. Several of our 27 guests were returning visitors and we loved seeing them again.
