Bullard Heights Workday

We want to touch base and remind everyone we will be having another work day at Bullard Heights on Saturday, April 3rd, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm.

The work day will be just like the last one. We will continue to clear brush from the park. If you have a sling blade or a yo-yo (Mr. Tim) please bring it. Other tools that will be handy are: bow saw, limb saw, long handled pruning shears. Long sleeves, pants, and sturdy shoes are recommended.

Spring is here and the plants are beginning to Bud and awake from dormancy. Poison Ivy is very prevalent in the wooded areas around the creek, so be mindful.

We can start applying herbicide to invasive and opportunistic woody plants. In May we will start spraying for invasives. If you have a spray canister please let me know. There is a lot of ground to cover at the park, and I would like to do a walk through to show you what we are looking to eliminate. Physical removal and chemical removal are not mutually exclusive. It is imperative that we do both correctly or else all our work is for nothing.

Also with Spring are the bugs! Please know that you will be coming in direct contact with ticks, fleas, fire ants, and wasps at the park. If you are allergic please let me know, and bring an eppi pen!

Per our conversation last work day, we are planning on trying to establish a wildflower area at the park. If anyone can get their hands on some wildflower seed, please let me know. Bluebonnet seed is acceptable, and I will even use Zinnia’s because they are native to Texas and Mexico. There are several methods of seed dispersal we can use. I feel like using several tactics to plant the seeds will be the best way forward.
