Bat Acoustic Monitoring
Location: Various sites around Ellis & Navarro County
Project Chair: Sue Frary

“Texas happens to be the battiest state in the country! It is home to 32 of the 47 species of bats found in the United States.” -TPWD
The goal of this project is to assist Texas Parks and Wildlife Nature Trackers in the acoustic monitoring of Texas Bats. This is a 5-year project, beginning in 2024, wherein ITMN members placed bat acoustic monitors on their land in the spring to record bat calls. The data is then shared to the North American Bat Monitoring project of the US Geological Survey.
Recent Activity: 19 volunteers with 182 volunteer hours and 30 hours of advanced training.
- In 2025: 13 sites were monitored over a 9-week period between April-June.
- In 2025: Our most prevalent bat species were Eastern Red, Seminole, and Evening Bats, with good recordings in late June of Tri-Color Bats.
- In 2024: 9 sites were monitored by ITMN members between May-June.
