Project: Corsicana Pollinator Garden

Corsicana Pollinator Garden
Location: I.O.O.F Park Corsicana, TX 75110
Project Chairs: Rena Sutphin, Bob Kingman, Hannah Basden

The Corsicana Pollinator Garden in I.O.O.F Park is an educational area that showcases the benefits of native plants and grasses to the Navarro County community. The garden demonstrates how native ecosystems support bees, birds, butterflies, and other pollinators, transforming an open area of the park into a lively, public space.

In 2025, Indian Trail Master Naturalist volunteers chose I.O.O.F Park in Corsicana, Texas, as the prime location for a pollinator habitat.

ITMN received funding from the Navarro Community Foundation and materials from the Corsicana Parks and Recreation Department, and the garden was established in spring 2025 with solarization of the plot.

Beds were laid out and lined with rocks in fall 2025; soils was then added, and Indian Trail volunteers gathered flora from their yards and nearby nurseries to plant.

ITMN currently leads ongoing maintenance, monitoring, and education in the garden, partnering with the City of Corsicana. The chapter has successfully registered the site as a Certified Wildlife Habitat, and it’s officially listed as a Homegrown National Park. The group is adding more educational signage and will eventually expand the space and include shade trees and more native plants and grasses.

In March 2026, ITMN volunteers successfully planted more native plants and grasses, including Malvaviscus arboreus (Turk’s Cap), Lantana urticoides (Texas Lantana), and Rudbeckia hirta (Black-eyed Susan), to name a few.

The Corsicana Pollinator Garden enhances the quality of life for Navarro County and its surrounding communities, serving as a living blueprint for the public to learn what they can plant in their own yards.
