Central Texas Mussels: Species Listing and Critical Habitat Designations

April 9 @ 6:30 am - 7:30 pm

Texas is home to more than 50 species of freshwater mussels, including many state or basin-level endemics.  A dozen of these species are currently in various stages of listing and review by the Service for protection under the Endangered Species Act. The seven Central Texas Mussels are the first to make their way through this listing process, leading to final listing decisions and the designation of critical habitat in the Guadalupe, Colorado, Brazos, and Trinity River basins. This presentation will discuss the species review and listing process, the outcomes of the reviews for these species, relevant protections under the Endangered Species Act, and future conservation approaches and efforts for these species.
