Conservation Opportunity Areas of Texas

The Conservation Opportunity Areas (COA) of Texas model highlights potentially important habitats for Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN) and other conservation priorities in the state. The COA functions as both a decision-support model and a database, combining information such as species observations, ecological communities, landscape features, habitat connectivity, expert knowledge, and conservation threats to provide a comprehensive view of Texas’ diverse conservation priorities. In addition to providing a tool for informed conservation decisions, it is designed to support the SWAP requirements of “identification of Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN) habitats, threats, actions, monitoring, partnerships and public engagement.” The COA model and resulting database is designed to be a flexible decision-support tool that can support a variety of conservation planning goals, such as landscape-scale conservation and wildlife management, identifying gaps in species observations and informing where these species may occur.
