Downtown Houston
April 1 – May 31, 2024
When: Early mornings (around sunrise)
Join this important community science project where you can make a difference by collecting data that will help figure out how we can protect migrating birds from window strike deaths. Approximately one billion birds are killed each year by striking buildings and with peak migration approaching, now is one of the best times to volunteer to help address this critical ecological issue.
Collision monitoring takes place in the early mornings around sunrise. Monitors work in teams of 2-3, patrolling a 2-mile predetermined route around 10 buildings in downtown, collecting data on birds that have been injured or killed by striking buildings.
Volunteers do not need to have expert knowledge about birds – data is entered into the iNaturalist app where others can help identify or confirm the species. Volunteers receive a detailed training on collision monitoring and data collection, as well as what to do with injured or killed birds that are found in the course of monitoring. All the tools and materials needed to perform the job will be provided, but we need enthusiastic and meticulous monitors to patrol the routes. There is no minimum shift requirement so you are welcome to join for a single day or the whole season!
