What is OE?
OE is a parasite that infects butterflies that host on milkweed. Their spores breaks open when ingested by monarch caterpillars. Inside the caterpillar it proliferates and grows. Their debilitating impact is made during the pupation of the adult butterfly causing them to be weak with crippled wings when the emerge from their chrysalis.
OE parasites is a real threat to monarch populations. OE monitoring and testing is key to curbing the disease.
