Join Trees for Houston, a Harris County Flood Control District Forester, and the Greater Houston Off-Road Biking Association (who have bike trails in the area) to plant trees along the south side of Buffalo Bayou just west of Wilcrest. This is an area that has been clear-cut for an infrastructure project. We will be planting 40 trees (obtained from Trees for Houston): American Sycamore, River Birch, Black Cherry and Beautyberry.
This is our first event in an attempt to improve the health of the trees/shrubs along the south side of Buffalo Bayou. It is scheduled for 10/19/2024, starting at 8 am.
An equally important part of what we want to do is find an environmentally suitable solution to managing the vines that are killing trees and pulling down branches/whole trees.
The expertise of a Master Naturalist would be invaluable to us in these efforts. We would like your expertise in planting/nurturing trees and control of invasive vines.
We are in the process of recruiting volunteers for all sorts of tasks (physical labor of planting trees and all the support roles for that). Depending on how your volunteers like to work and your target audience, you might be able to educate a diverse group of people. And I’m hoping our small group of private citizens leading this effort might be able to get advice for both our imminent tree-planting and what would be ongoing efforts to control the invasive vines.
Contact Kathryn (Kathy) Clark for more information and to sign up.
Record your time as GCMN – Trails and Wildscapes. Include location, service performed and sponsoring entity (Private Citizens, HCFCD Forecters, Trees for Houston and Greater Houston Off Road Biking Association).
