The Secret Life of Trees by Glenn Olsen. Rice University

Trees are magnificent, life-sustaining plants, among the oldest life-forms on Earth. They provide oxygen, shade, medicine, food, and shelter to people and many other creatures. They also grace us with their beauty and may reduce stress and enhance health. Yet most people know surprisingly little about trees. What better place to discover trees than on the Rice campus, home to 4,600 trees and designated as an Arbor Day Foundation “Tree Campus USA”? Master naturalist Glenn Olsen explores how trees have shaped ecosystems, the evolution of plants and animals, and human history. Learn to identify major native Texas trees that grow in Houston. Discover which trees would make excellent additions to your yard and which invasive species to avoid. We’ll also review astonishing discoveries revealing chemical communication between trees and how some trees feed their young via a complex underground network. Join us to learn to see the forest and the trees!
