The 5th grade students from Charles August Arnold Elementary in San Antonio are preparing for an extended day trip to the Bamberger Ranch Preserve. Eight or more volunteers will be needed on December 10th to lead nature hikes as well as escort students from one activity to another while answering questions and identifying various points of interest on the ranch.
About 80 students will arrive by no later than 10 am and receive a brief introduction to the ranch at the Historical Marker near the front of the ranch. From there, the students will travel to the Center, unload their lunch provisions, take a restroom break, and review the plan for the day. Next the students will be divided into 4 groups. At scheduled times, each group will rotate through one of the following activities: 1) a tour of the ranch via the Bluebonnet Trailer; 2) the birds of prey demonstration; 3) a rain machine demonstration and nature hike; 4) meeting a biologist; and 5) a skulls investigation. There will be a break for lunch from 12:15 pm to 1 pm and lunch will be provided for all volunteers. Students will be finished with all environmental education activities by 4 pm at which time students are to be on the bus ready to depart the ranch.
Eight or more volunteers are needed to: a) move their group of students from one station to the next during their assigned timeslot; b) answer/encourage questions about what they saw at each station; and c) lead a nature hike using the scavenger hunt list. Ideally, at least two volunteers will accompany each group of students throughout the day. However, if volunteers are only available in the morning or afternoon, we can work with your time constraints. Otherwise, volunteers should plan to arrive by 9:30 am at the Margaret Bamberger Research & Education Center (MBREC) parking lot. This early arrival should allow plenty of time for volunteers to look over the various stations before the students arrive. Volunteers should be finished by no later than 4:30 pm.
If you have any interest in volunteering for this extended day trip, please let me know so I can work you into the schedule and let the ranch staff know who to expect and when.
