Pedernales Falls State Park – Smithsonian Journeys Tour

Sunday, April 7 — Smithsonian Journeys Tour at Pedernales Falls. Approximately 5-6 volunteers needed on the day before the Eclipse.
The Smithsonian has been organizing scientific themed expeditions around the world for anyone to join. It’s a pretty neat group, sort of like a cruise but in charter buses. There will be 150 people in this group, and they’ll be coming in 4 buses, with their own travel organizer person for each bus to keep them organized and on a schedule. See link below.
Here is what they organized for the visit to Pedernales Falls:
11:30am – 5:30pm – Buses will each go to a different activity and rotate through including:
- Bird Blinds: Could use a volunteer or two here to talk about what birds they see. The Group will likely be from out of state and be new to Texas birds.
- Fossil Table: They’ve requested a table to be set up at the falls overlook with fossils and rocks from the area. If we can get one or two volunteers to run the table (maybe rotating out) then this could also be open to the public during this time. Experience with geology not necessarily needed, Ranger Steve can provide labels, pictures and descriptions for each item.
- Amphitheater program: At the Star Theater Ranger Steve will provide a Skins & Skulls Program and could use a helper to either help present on various animals, or to pass around things for the group to feel.
If interested, stay for the Star Party:
8:00pm – Star Theater Astronomy presentation and Star Party with help of Austin Astronomical Society.
If anyone wants to help with any of these areas, we’ll have a captive audience of very interested individuals from all over the US. It will be extremely busy that weekend with people visiting for the Eclipse the next day, but as long as we plan to drive here early to avoid traffic there shouldn’t be too much of an issue getting to the park on time.
