Meet Serena Flynn
I was born in San Antonio and grew up in Converse, Bay City and Schertz, TX where I graduated from high school.
I went to college at Texas A& M and got my degree in Wildlife Ecology. I met my husband, Nick there. He is from El Paso and got his degrees in Biochemistry and is a professor at WT. When he graduated, he took his post-doc at Columbia University in New York City. I had never been out of Texas until I was 21 when he took me to Ruidoso, so NYC was a big move for me! I have worked as a veterinary technician, animal trainer, and zoo medical officer. I now make my living in financial/bookkeeping.
We have two amazing boys, Logan and Dillon. Logan is in his third year at Texas A&M and Dillon is a Junior at Canyon High School planning to attend Colorado School of Mines. My boys are my life and my job lets me mostly be a stay at home Mom with once a month travel to San Angelo.
I love animals and we have a dog, cat, bird, and ferret. All but the bird are strays that I have rescued, literally off the streets. I have decided to only bring home stray plants now that need homes to make sure I stay married. I get the pitiful plants on clearance at Walmart and Lowes and will fill my house and yard with my finds!
Other hobbies are hiking, photography, coin collecting, crafting and whatever my boys are into! I will try anything though and like rock climbing, sky diving, snowboarding, snorkeling, and four wheeling! There are still lots of things on my bucket list that I need to mark off and I am looking forward to more adventures!
I have my pickup truck but my REAL car is in the garage. A classic mustang was all I ever wanted growing up. My husband and I got my 1967 Wimbledon White Black hardtop mustang when I graduated. I have done most of the work on it myself and only got in over my head once when I was replacing the master cylinder.
I found Master Naturalists completely by accident when I stopped in the library during Open House in 2018. I get most of m y volunteer hours at the Wild West Wildlife Rehabilitation Center.
Don Laughery got me started out there in 2019 when they were setting up their new facility and I am so grateful to him. I love being out there and am amazed by how much we have grown. Since I am not working in my field of study, my time there feeds my soul and gives me something to look forward to.
A master naturalist goal of mine is to get my pollinator garden registered as a monarch way station.
