Smith County Master Gardeners Present: “Saving Savanna – Our Disappearing Oaks”
May 16 @ 11:30 am – 12:30 pm
The Smith County Master Gardeners invite the public to a compelling free lecture, “Saving Savanna: Our Disappearing Oaks,” on Thursday, May 16, at 11:30 a.m. in the Taylor Auditorium of the Tyler Public Library.
Presented by Dr. Greg Grant, Smith County Horticulturist with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, the talk will highlight the alarming loss of oak trees and savanna ecosystems in East Texas and beyond. Once a defining feature of our native landscapes, oak savannas are now vanishing due to land use changes, development, invasive species, and fire suppression.
Dr. Grant will discuss the ecological importance of oaks and native grassland ecosystems, the species they support, and how gardeners and landowners can contribute to restoration efforts through informed planting, stewardship, and landscape choices.
Doors open at 11:00 a.m. No registration is required. The event is free and open to all nature lovers, conservationists, gardeners, and anyone interested in preserving East Texas’ unique natural heritage.
