On Tuesday, three students and their teacher placed three “Shelbyville Cubes” into the lake. They constructed these cubes during the spring semester at Leggett High School using supplies provided by Texas Parks and Wildlife and by the Trinity River Authority (TRA). Instruction to construct the structures came from Friends of Lake Livingston and Texas Master Naturalists. TRA manages what and where things can be put in Lake Livingston, and assisted the students by providing boat transportation to the new deployment site.
In previous construction projects, the area high schools have used a design called a Georgia Cube that is constructed with PVC pipe and drainage pipe. These new cubes were developed by fishermen on Lake Shelbyville in Illinois as a variation of the Georgia Cube. The Geogia Cube was developed by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Studies in Lake Shelbyville have found that fish start congregating on the revised structures in only hours after deployment. If you would like to participate in projects that enhance the health of the lake and its plant and animal inhabitants, you can contact Friends of Lake Livingston at Friendsoflakelivingston@gmail.com
If you search on “Locations of Fish Habitat Structures – Texas Parks & Wildlife” you will find the locations in Lake Livingston where structures have been placed.
