โBluebirds across Texas, one nest box at a time.โ This is the motto and goal of the Texas Bluebird Society.
Officially known as the Eastern Bluebird, thankfully this species population is stable.
It is a good time to put up a nest box, as male bluebirds are looking for a likely hole. The male will locate the female on a tour of cavities he has found. She will enter the one she chooses.
Not many nest boxes were sold during Nature Fest so I have plenty. They cost $30 each, or if you join the Texas Bluebird Society for $25, you will get a free nest box.
That opens a citizen science opportunity with Nest Watch. With a phone app from Cornell University, you report eggs laid, eggs hatched, and fledglings. I will be glad to tell you all about it. Contact Peggy Tolboom at equest@dairysolutionsinc.com.
