All members, guests, and visitors are invited to the chapter’s monthly meetings. Each meeting starts with a potluck (dinner on us for guests and visitors), followed by a speaker and the business meeting.
6:00 Potluck
6:30 Speaker: Orienteering by Dave Moore, Chapter Member.
Is compass use old school? Can you navigate if your phone dies? This presentation will introduce members to the sport of orienteering and how to use it to get children outdoors and moving. To avoid getting frequently lost, the use of a compass is an early skill Dave developed when he learned to fly in1968, 30 years before GPS became available. As a naval officer the use of a compass was considered an essential tool, though Dave discovered that they are useless within the steel hull of a nuclear submarine, 500 feet underwater. Dave and his wife Wendy became Master Naturalists with the Rio Brazos Chapter in 2009.
If you own a compass, Dave has asked that you bring it for his presentation. We will also have some available for folks to use if you don’t have one.
