Our chapter enters the Shangri La Botanical Gardens Scarecrow Festival each year, and this year’s entry won the Director’s Award for Best Environmental Message. Our theme, “Birding is for Everyone!” was selected to focus on the fact that all people, including those with a disability, can enjoy participating in birding activities and being outdoors in nature.
Our scarecrow entry was made up of items destined for the landfill, including a wheelchair that was crafted from a child’s toy and a multitude of birds creatively constructed from a plethora of waste materials, many of which were procured from the roadside. We also featured a contest to guess how many birds were seen within the set-up, offering a prize of a T shirt from the Great Texas Birding Classic to carry out the theme. We can’t wait to see what we can do for next year’s festival.
