Caldwood Elementary Field Trip at BISD Outdoor Education Center

Request from Kathy Smith, Village Creek State Park Interpreter/Volunteer Coordinator:

Volunteer help is desperately needed for a very large group of children from BISD on Friday, May 18, from 9a until 2p.  The event will be held at the Beaumont Outdoor Education Center that is just down the road from Village Creek State Park (120 Creek Rd, Lumberton, TX 77657).

All materials to do the stations are ready to go, and I will send volunteers more information and instructions for the activity prior to the event so that they will not feel unprepared.

The Bird Migration Game is an activity where the students play the part of a migrating bird.  At each of the 25 stops they will encounter “hazards” similar to what migrating birds encounter on their journey.  This activity will require at least three volunteers.

The Bird Adaptations Station will cover what adaptations birds have that allow them to fly, reproduce, and thrive in whatever niche they occupy.  It includes an activity where each student rolls a die to determine what food they eat and must choose the correct “beak” to fill their stomach in 60 seconds.  This activity will require at least five volunteers.

D’Ann volunteered herself and her husband to man an additional skins and skulls station.  They might need help with this station.

There are several additional stations planned by the teacher that is organizing this event.  As soon as I get it, I will pass it on to those who sign up to help.

Each session will last about 30 minutes and will start at 9 am and end at 2pm.  The kids will alternate lunch breaks by grade level, but it looks like volunteers will keep going through lunch.  I plan on bringing drinks and snacks for our volunteers.
