Ocean of Changes

Marine ecologist Malin Pinsky is leading the charge to collect the data needed to shape ocean policy amid global temperature rise. His lab at Rutgers University focuses on understanding “how marine ecosystems are changing, why they are changing and what choices we can make as a society to alter that course,” he says.

On October 22 at 1:30 p.m. CDT, Science News’ earth and climate reporter Carolyn Gramling will chat with Pinsky about how climate change is affecting marine life and what we can do about it. You can join the conversation by participating in the live webinar.

Pinsky, recognized as one of this year’s SN 10: Scientists to watch, takes a holistic approach to studying changing oceans by looking at species, their habitats and resource management. One research area in particular has garnered significant media attention over the last year: how warming ocean waters are reducing the sustainable catch of many different fish species around the globe. And his team’s work was incorporated into a high-profile international report suggesting that nearly 1 million species, including many fish, are currently threatened with extinction, in part because of human activities.

Pinsky will share his data on climate change and the state of the oceans, and describe his work with government agencies and councils to plan for sustainable fisheries.
