Golden Triangle Sierra Club Meeting
Date: Tuesday, January 8, 2019
Time: Food at 6; meeting at 6:30
Place: Lupe Tortilla, 2050 Interstate 10 Access Rd, Beaumont, TX 77707
Topic: The Coastal Barrier
Presenter: Azure Bevington, Ph.D, is a coastal ecologist and environmental consultant, focusing on coastal wetlands and estuarine systems. Azure became interested in following the various ‘coastal spine’ and Ike Dike proposals when the US Army Corps released the Draft Integrated Feasibility Report and Environments Impact Statement in late Oct. 2018. She became quite concerned about the enormous extent of the proposed levees and gate structures outlined in the Coastal Barrier portion of the proposal and also worried that the coastal communities wouldn’t be able to wade through the nearly 2000 pages of the report and appendices within the extremely short 75 day comment period. She continues to work to get the word out and wants to help support better more responsive coastal protections, which do not sacrifice the health of Galveston Bay or our communities.
